My book review of Medicinal Herbs A Beginner’s Guide

The Herb Garden Originally planted in the 1870...

When I was growing up my family was very into all sorts of alternative medicines, massage, reflexology, and herbs to name a few. On the farm the importance of plants was deeply instilled in me, and all through my adult life I’ve used herbs as one of the main ways of treating my health issues. But somehow I’ve never got around to growing my own medicinal garden and making my own medicines, how have I gone this long without doing that? I’ve gone to workshops that teach you how to make your own tinctures and salves, which is quite easy, but I have never done that either. For years Lee and I used this great herbal salve from a now defunct herbalist. This stuff worked on any skin problem, burns, infections, cuts, bruises, sores, hemorrhoids, pimples, EVERYTHING! Now that we can’t get it any more we really miss it, and shockingly I’ve been unable to find anything even close. The formula included about 20 different herbs, which is why it worked so well, but I can’t even find a salve at the herb store with 4 or 5 healing herbs. So necessity being the mother of invention and all that stuff, I decided its high time I figured out how to make my own. So first off I need a refresher course on what herbs do what, and sweet serendipity while killing time at a bookstore I find this gem of a book, apothecary storage in my kitchen. That may be a whole other post, as always I will be sharing all the good info with you.

The final chapter of my Ecosculpt diary

Ecosculpt announced the winners of the contest a couple of days ago, I’ve been so tired I’ve not had time to get this video out till now. In this last entry I take the time to look at what this project was like, would I do it again, and was it worth it? Next week I’ll be back to more usual Elemental Cheapness posts, hope you enjoyed this glimpse into the world behind the art.

Entries for Ecosculpt 2012

Thought I’d give you some video footage of the entries for Ecosculpt 2012 downtown in Cincinnati. I do apologize, I may have missed some entries. It was 25 mile an hour winds when I went down there, and my sculpture was spinning around and falling over, so I was freaked out and distracted. I had to go back the next day and work on making it stronger, the metal base actually got bent, that’s some force! I will have video of the repair, my thoughts on the competition, and the awards ceremony next week. Today is just a look at the sculptures in their Fountain Square setting.

Ecosculpt 2012 diary: part 4

I am in the home stretch, I have a few days off to finish the sculpture then on friday April 13th it is due to be installed. Basic building is done and now its just fine tuning this monstrosity to give it the best look. It’s a weird, twisty, creepy thing, which is just the way I like it. Since holes and mistakes are inevitable I am making it part of the design and emphasizing it and adding more jags and snags. Today is my last build day, planing on reworking the head, want to make it more interesting. Here’s the latest video which includes close-ups of the sculpture, it’s very hard to photograph in my living room, but want to try to give you an idea of what it looks like.
